What Is Overdrive Gear In A Car
OD, O/D, or Overdrive is the last gear or highest gear of the transmission, which provides lower Engine RPMs at high speed. Overdrive is actually a setting on a car’s transmission that can be used to help the engine run more efficiently. It provides the highest gear output with minimum engine input.
According to research, the engine speed in the overdrive state is very lower than the engine speed in the fourth gear. It means that noise and fuel consumption and engine wearing and damages will be decreased.
This means in overdrive mode, the transmission and drive train rotates faster than the engine speed. In other words, the engine RPMs remain low while the transmission speed remains high. You can also say that the overdrive is the “over gearing” which overdrives the output shaft of the transmission.
The main function of the overdrive is to reduce the burden on the engine and increase efficiency. It reduces engine RPM at a certain high speed resulting in better fuel efficiency at high speeds.

In a manual transmission, the overdrive is the last gear of the transmission. In five-speed transmission; the overdrive is the fifth gear, while in six-speed transmission the overdrive is the sixth gear.
The overdrive gear is a separate gear attached to the end of the gearbox. It consists of an electrically or hydraulically operated epicyclic gear train when enabled, provides high rotation per minute to the output shaft (transmission) with lower engine rotation per minute. It is usually engaged when the average speed is above 70 km/h (40-45 mph).
Generally, in top gear, which is also called direct drive, the engine rpm and output shafts are rotating at the same speed, which somehow increases the workload on the engine.

The overdrive features come both in manual and automatic transmissions. In a manual transmission, the driver has to engage and disengage the OD. While in an automatic transmission; the overdrive is a default feature, automatically initiated by the ECU when it senses the proper conditions are met.

In older cars, the overdrive ON-OFF button is placed on the side of the shifter. The button usually contains the letter “OD” or an icon of a car ascending or descending a hill. The overdrive light only shows on the instrument panel when the overdrive is turned OFF. It means when there is no O/D light on the instrument panel, the overdrive is active.
But when the O/D OFF light appears on the instrument panel, it means the overdrive is off. Turning OFF the overdrive prevents the car to use it. In modern cars, the overdrive is operated by the ECU and automatically engages when the speed and requirements are met.
