A mass air flow sensor (MAF) is a device used to measure the mass of air flowing into a car’s internal combustion engine. The MAF sensor is located between the air filter and the throttle body. The MAF sensor measures the amount of airflow entering the engine and feeds this information to the engine control unit (ECU). The ECU then uses this information to adjust the fuel injection and ignition timing.
The check engine light in your car is one of the most important indicator lights. It can come on for a variety of reasons, many of which are related to your car’s emission control system. One common reason for the check engine light to come on, especially in older cars, is a problem with the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. Over time, the MAF sensor can become dirty and needs to be cleaned. If the mass air flow sensor is not working properly, it will need to be reset. Below is a simple guide to resetting the mass air flow sensor in the car.
How To Reset Mass Air Flow Sensor
One of the most crucial sensors in your car is the mass airflow sensor. It instructs the engine on how much air to utilize as fuel, and if it isn’t working correctly, you may notice your vehicle is moving slowly, have bad gas mileage, or have trouble starting the engine. An essential component of the engine system is the mass airflow sensor.
By measuring the amount of air entering the engine, it can alter the fuel and spark timing as necessary. In severe circumstances, a malfunctioning sensor can make you go slower, have less fuel efficiency, and result in accidents. Incorrect sensor issues can be solved by resetting the component. The following steps will be followed for resetting the mass air flow sensor by idling the engine.
- Before beginning, turn on the engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature.
- Now, Turn OFF the engine.
- After that, unplug the mass airflow sensor connection.
- Start the car’s engine now, and let it run for at least five seconds before moving on.
- Engine Check Light will appear on the dashboard.
- Turn off the engine and reconnect the mass airflow sensor harness connector.
- Make sure the Mass Airflow Sensor is connected properly.
- Turn on the ignition switch.
- Now connect the OBD2 scanner to the vehicle and Read the Fault codes.
- A DTC will appear in the OBD2 scanner.
- Clear your vehicle computer’s DTC memory and you are done.
This will allow the computer to reset itself and relearn the correct air/fuel mixture. After completing the previous processes, you can now switch the engine ON and the Mass Airflow sensor has been reset and is ready to function.
